4th Sunday after Epiphany

AS WE GATHER
Early in His ministry Jesus preaches His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) and like so many of His teachings, it leaves us scratching our heads. How can “poor in spirit” be a blessing? How can “hungering and thirsting for righteousness” be a blessing? How can ANY of the Beatitudes be a blessing? Yet God reminds us in Isaiah 55: “…as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Jesus’ sermon intrigues us and challenges us, and to the one who submits to its wisdom, it blesses, forms and shapes us into a people living in mission in Jesus’ name. Be blessed in this, as together we engage Jesus’ Word, and allow it to have its way with us.
